Real Talk: Why You Should Be Checking Your Breasts!

Milly Jones

It’s October and you know what that means—Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One thing I feel strongly about when starting Wiggle was opening up conversation around important women’s health and intimate wellness issues. And this is a big one. So with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it is the perfect time to talk about checking your boobs and staying in touch with your body so you can self-check and understand any changes which could make a big difference to your overall health.

Why Bother With Self-Exams?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women in Europe, with about 1 in 9 of us facing a diagnosis in our lifetime. The key to beating it? Catching it early. Checking your breasts every month is a super easy way to get familiar with what’s normal for your body. And don’t worry—they take only a few minutes, no extra tools needed!

How to check your breasts in 3 Simple Steps

Mirror Check: Stand in front of a mirror with your arms relaxed, then raise them above your head. Look for any changes in size, shape, or color—like dimples or unusual swelling.

Lie Down:  Lie down and use your right hand to check your left breast and vice versa. Make small circles with your fingers over each part of your breast, from your collarbone to your under-arm.

During Your Shower: Lots of people find it easier to do this part in the shower. Use the same small, circular motions on each breast.

What Should You Feel For?

You’re checking for anything out of the ordinary—like new lumps, thickened areas, or any strange tenderness. If something feels off, don’t panic! Most lumps aren’t cancerous, but it’s smart to get any changes checked by a doctor.

Doctor Checks You Should Know About

While checking your breasts at home is great, they’re not the whole picture. Did you know in Cyprus breast screening starts from the age of 45. But don’t worry if you are younger. You can ask for a referral for a breast ultrasound on Gesy once you’re over the age of 36. Even younger? Set aside a savings pot for screenings each year which are relatively inexpensive but could support early detection.

Why It Matters

At Wiggle, we firmly believe in preventative health and wellness, and checking your own breasts is something free and easy you can do in your own home So why wouldn't you? Think of it as a little self-care habit with big benefits. Plus, if we all start normalizing these kinds of health checks, we’re making it easier for everyone to stay proactive and informed.

So, this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, why not set a reminder? Five minutes is all it takes to give yourself a quick, empowering check-in.

Your future self will thank you!
