Real Talk: Get to know your Pelvic Floor

Anastasia Uvarova

Understanding your intimate health is very important, and one of the most important parts of intimate health is our Pelvic Floor. People associate it with something discussed in and around pregnancy, but its also important for day to day movements and for sexual enjoyment. We asked Anastasia from Alpha Physio Care to deep dive into the Pelvic Floor, what is it, why it's important and how we look after it.

The Pelvic Floor is a group of muscles that covers the bottom of your pelvis and prevents

things from falling out. Literally!

The Pelvic Floor can contract and relax like any other muscles which allows us to pee, poop,

enjoy sex and give birth to children in a controlled manner. Like any muscles, if they are neglected and not used properly, their function can be lost. Therefore, it is of great importance to keep them toned, elastic and take care of them!

In order to keep your pelvic floor muscles healthy , there are a few things that can help:

- Using your diaphragm whilst breathing, as the two work together.

- Integrate lower body exercises for strength and mobility regularly.

- Do your Kegel exercises within movement, exercise routines and together with

breathing. And don't forget to relax those muscles too, just as you would any other muscle group.

- Orgasms are a great way to keep those muscles toned and keep the blood flowing. And it doesn't matter how you achieve them, solo or with a partner!

- Avoid prolonged sitting and keep active, walking regularly. Pelvic floor muscles get lazy when they are constantly supported by the surface we sit on!

- Visit a pelvic floor physiotherapist at least once in your lifetime; before conception,

but also during pregnancy and most definitely after!

- Utilise special toys to help train your pelvic floor such as Kegel Balls, after your individual

assessment.

- Keep constipation at bay to avoid straining and overstretching those muscles!

Have you ever thought about your pelvic floor and what amazing work it does for our body?
